Home of the first gold rush in the United States (1829) Lumpkin County's Dahlonega (County Seat) is now home to the Dahlonega Gold Museum, and North Georgia College and State University which includes the Military College of Georgia.


Located in the North Georgia Mountains, Lumpkin County offers a variety of outdoor recreation choices. There are 17 hiking trails, 10 bike trails, 7 horse trail, 2 publicly owned camping areas, a 14 trail OHV system, and 5 waterfalls.
