North Carolina, also known as the Tar Heel state, is located
in the Southeastern United States and shares its borders with
South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and the Atlantic
Ocean. With 100 counties in North Carolina, the landscape varies
from its beautiful coastal beaches of the Outer Banks to the
Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina.
There are over 40 state parks in North Carolina and mountains
with elevations of over 6,000 feet, including Mount Mitchell; at
an elevation of 6,684 feet it is the highest point in the
eastern US, located in Yancey County. Visitors to North Carolina
have a variety of activities that they can choose from
including, hiking, camping, boating, fishing, biking, horseback
riding and of course many beautiful scenic drives. North
Carolina also has over 200 waterfalls located throughout the
Western part of the state. Many of these falls are on state or
federal land and some are easily accessible.
