August 2007 In August we traveled to Dahlonega, Georgia home to the first Gold Rush in the United States to do a little panning. Of the 2 gold panning businesses we found in Dahlonega (there may be more) we choose Crisson Gold Mine because it looked more like a working gold mine and less like a tourist attraction. Crisson Gold Mine was established in 1847 and is the oldest gold mining establishment in North Georgia.
Armed with our bucket of dirt and some gold pans we walk down to the panning area. Being August and very hot we picked out a spot under their roof in the shade. One of their employees gave us a quick demonstration of gold panning technique, which turns out to not be very difficult, but it does take some getting use to. Wow! We found gold in our very first pan, and every pan after that as well. Now I'm not going to mislead you, we did not strike it rich with the amount of gold we found, but the experience of finding your own gold was great. We have our gold in a little bottle of water and I cannot tell you how many times we have held it up to look at the gold inside. I should point out that across from me a lady from Pennsylvania (I think) did fine at least 2 nuggets, she was still at it when we left. Our experience at Crisson Gold Mine was great. Years from now we may not remember much about our trip to Dahlonega. We will remember walking around town looking at all the great shops and we will remember how nice everything looked, but I believe what we will really remember the most is a couple of hours we spent playing in dirt & water for our little bottle of gold.
