Hanging Dog Recreation Area

Located along Lake Hiawassee within the Nantahala National Forest, 5 miles northwest of Murphy, North Carolina, Hanging Dog Recreation Area takes it's name from Hanging Dog Creek, scene of the last battle of the Civil War. Offering a variety of amenities and recreational opportunities including camping, hiking, biking, 2 boat ramps (Hanging Dog Boat Ramp & Ramsey Bluff Boat Ramp), and a picnic area, Hanging Dog Recreational Area may be reached by traveling along Joe Brown Highway (NC 1326) from Murphy for 5 miles. Turn left at the Hanging Dog Recreation Area Sign.

Hiawassee Lake offers excellent fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass, bream, crappie, walleye pike and white bass. With 180 miles of shoreline, Lake Hiawassee provides an excellent opportunity for boating and water skiing.

Two nearby streams are designated as public trout waters.
