| Located along Lake Hiawassee within the
Nantahala National Forest, 5 miles northwest of Murphy, North
Carolina, Hanging Dog Recreation Area takes it's name from Hanging Dog
Creek, scene of the last battle of the Civil War. Offering a variety
of amenities and recreational opportunities including camping,
hiking,
biking,
2 boat ramps (Hanging
Dog Boat Ramp & Ramsey
Bluff Boat Ramp), and a picnic area, Hanging Dog
Recreational Area may be reached by traveling along Joe Brown Highway
(NC 1326) from Murphy for 5 miles. Turn left at the Hanging Dog
Recreation Area Sign.
Hiawassee Lake offers excellent fishing for largemouth and
smallmouth bass, bream, crappie, walleye pike and white bass. With 180
miles of shoreline, Lake Hiawassee provides an excellent opportunity
for boating and water skiing. |
