Hanging Dog Recreation Area is on Hiawassee Lake in the Nantahala National
Forest, five miles northwest of Murphy North Carolina. The area takes its name from Hanging
Dog Creek, scene of the last battle of the Civil War. Hiawassee Lake has
excellent fishing for largemouth and small mouth bass, bream, crappie,
walleye pike, and white bass. The lake has 180 miles of shoreline and is
fine for boating and water skiing. Two nearby streams are designated as
public trout waters. |
|
| Hanging Dog has four camping loops with 69 family units, each with a
table, fire place, parking spur, and tent platform. The units can
accommodate tents, backpackers, or RV's up to 22 feet, some up to 32 feet.
There are sanitary facilities and drinking water for picnickers and campers.
Refuge receptacles are located on the main entrance road. A launching ramp provides
boating access to the lake. A picnic shelter is located near the boat ramp.
Trail access, sightseeing, and paved access roads are all provided. A
host/hostess is located near the main gate. |
Directions:
Take NC 1326 ( Joe Brown Highway) Northwest from Murphy for 5 miles. Then
