Cherokee County North Carolina Bike Trails

Ramsey Bluff Mountain Bike and Hiking Trail System

Located within Hanging Dog Recreation Area, 8+ miles Ramsey Bluff Bike Trail Area is a series of connected loops offering an interesting variety of combinations to explore. To visualize the trails, give a 1 year old a crayon and have them scribble a single line. Ramsey Bluff Trail system is a jumble of intersections of the same trail over and over again. To the first time (or more) visitor Ramsey Bluff Trail can be confusing as you arrive at junction after junction, all with the same name going in all directions. The best news about Ramsey Bluff Bike Trail System is the facts that they are great trails and receive little use.
Due to the layout of the trails and the multiple intersections with the same trail and other trails, it is possible to hike/ride for many hours without feeling like, or even knowing that you may be repeating a section. It should be noted that in 2009 a man became lost on these trails. He was rescued by boaters after making his way to the lake and calling for help. I have been very close to lost several times as this is almost a maze of trails. On the good side, you are never far from the campgrounds or the lake.

Available for both hikers and mountain bikers, Ramsey Bluff Bike Trail System provides an almost unlimited variety of riding/hiking opportunities. These trails are without a doubt one of the best kept secret in the North Carolina Mountains.

Of the 7 trails located within the Ramsey Bluff Bike Trail system only 2 are not available for bikes. Ironically one of the trails not available to bike riders is Ramsey Bluff Trail, the other being Mingus Trail.

The trails in the area include:

  1. Farmer Top Overlook Trail
  2. Mingus Trail
  3. Nottely River Connector
  4. Ramsey Bend North Trail
  5. Ramsey Bend South Trail
  6. Ramsey Bluff Trail
  7. Ramsey Connector Trail

Hanging Dog Recreational Area may be reached by traveling along Joe Brown Highway (NC 1326) from Murphy North Carolina for 5 miles. Turn left at the Hanging Dog Recreation Area Sign.
