Ridge upon ridge of endless forest straddling the
border between North Carolina and
Tennessee, Great Smoky Mountains
National Park is one of the largest protected areas in the Eastern United
States. World renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life, the
beauty of its ancient mountains, the quality of its remnants of Southern
Appalachian mountain culture, and the depth and integrity of its
wilderness sanctuary, the park attracts over nine million visitors each
year. Once a part of the Cherokee homeland, the Smokies today are a
hiker's paradise with over 800 miles of trails.

|
The Smokies offer activities for visitors of
various ages and interests. Recommended activities include camping, hiking
the park's more than 800 miles of trails, picnicking, sightseeing,
fishing, auto touring, horseback riding, nature viewing, waterfalls and
photographic opportunities abound. Guided horseback rides are available in
season at four horse stables in the park in Tennessee and North Carolina.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park contains
some of the largest tracts of wilderness in the East and is a critical
sanctuary for a wide variety of animals. Protected in the park are some 66
species of mammals, over 200 varieties of birds, 50 native fish species,
and more than 80 types of reptiles and amphibians.
The symbol of the Smokies, the American Black Bear, is perhaps the most
famous resident of the park. Great Smoky Mountains National Park provides
the largest protected bear habitat in the East. Though populations are
variable, biologists estimate approximately 1,800 bears live in the park,
a density of over two bears per square mile.
