Whiteside Mountain Trail

Located between Cashiers and Highlands North Carolina, the 2 mile Whiteside Mountain Trail is rated "more difficult". Climbing above Whiteside Mountain's 750' high cliffs (the highest cliffs in Eastern North America), Whiteside Mountain Trail forms a loop and offers great views into South Carolina and over the Chattooga River headwaters, 2,100' below.

Beginning as an old logging trail which was once used as a road for a shuttle bus, Whiteside Mountain Trail continues to the top where a 21 degree view is available. Continue along Whiteside Mountain Trail for views of the drop offs along the cliffs.

Because a loop is formed, Whiteside Mountain Trail may be hiked in 2 different directions. Traveling to the left from the trailhead, offers the easier route of the old logging road, while traveling along the right section leads up a set of steep stairs.

While visiting Whiteside Mountain, watch for Peregrine Falcons, which were reintroduced in 1985.

To reach Whiteside Mountain Trail from Highlands, travel east along US 64 for 5 miles and turn right onto NC 168 (Whiteside Mountain Road). Continue along NC 180, following signs to the trailhead.
