This is a relaxing, flat, riverside hike for the first 4 miles, until
it starts climbing steeply along the Big Snowbird River, crossing the
river numerous times. You can avoid most of these crossings by going left
on trail #65 after 3 miles at Sassafras Creek. This will also take you to
the very scenic Sassafras Falls. Go over Burntrock Ridge on trail #65 until
you reach trail #64 again at the Snowbird River.
Directions:
From Robbinsville NC, go north on US 129 for about 3 miles to Forest
Service Road 75 on the left. This will eventually take you to the
trailhead when the road dead-ends after following the Big Snowbird River
for several miles. Get the Nantahala Nat. Forest map to negotiate the maze
of dirt roads leading into this remote area.
