Clay County North Carolina Hiking Trails

Leatherwood Loop Trail

Located within Nantahala National Forest, the 3.5 mile Leatherwood Loop Trail begins at the Fire's Creek Picnic Area and travels up the ridge to the top of the falls where it connects with Fires Creek Rim Trail. A moderately difficult trail, Leatherwood Loop Trail travels back down the ridge and exits the woods along the road at the parking area.

Personal note: I have hiked this trail many times. Although a few spots may be slick after a rain and several roots are exposed, my 2 year old had very little problem with the hike.

To reach Fire's Creek Rim Trail from Hayesville North Carolina, on US 64W, take NC 1301 northeast 3 miles to NC 1300. Travel west along NC1300 to FR 1344 (at the sign for Fire's Creek). Travel north 1.6 miles to Fire's Creek parking area.
