Clay County North Carolina Hiking Trails

Fires Creek Rim Trail

Located within Nantahala National Forest, the 23.4 mile Fires Creek Rim Trail travels along the rim around Fires Creek Wildlife Management Area and is marked (sparsely) with a blue blaze. Available for both hiking and horseback riding, Fire's Creek Rim Trail offers several side trail and access roads, but is normally traveled (if traveling by foot) from the Fire's Creek Picnic Area along the trail to Leatherwood Falls. Upon reaching Leatherwood Falls, Fire's Creek Rim Trail travels right as it climbs to the ridge. For a short walk turn left at the falls and travel 0.7 miles to the parking area.
Trails and Peaks along Fires Creek Rim Trail include:
  • Big Stamp (4,337') to Weatherman Bald (4,960'), 5.4 miles, with an average hiking time of 4 hours.
  • Weatherman Bald to Tusquitee Bald (5,240'), 1.9 miles with an average hiking time of 2.5 hours.
  • Tusquitee Bald to Chestnut Stump Knob (4,400'), 2.6 miles with an average hiking time of 3 hours.
  • Chestnut Stump Knob to Carver Gap (2,996'), 3.5 miles with an average hiking time of 3.5 hours.
  • Carver Gap to Hunter Camp (1,800') 3.75 miles with an average hiking time of 2 hours.
To reach Fire's Creek Rim Trail

From Hayesville North Carolina, on US 64W, take NC 1301 northeast 3 miles to NC 1300. Travel west along NC1300 to FR 1344 (at the sign for Fire's Creek). Travel north 1.6 miles to Fire's Creek parking area.

From Murphy North Carolina, travel east along US 64 towards Hayesville for 9 miles and turn left onto NC 1300. Continue north along NC 1300 for 4 miles and turn onto NC 1344, which will become Forest Service Road 340.
