Summers County West Virginia Hiking Trails

Big Branch Trail

New River Gorge National River

Length: 1.8 mile loop

Located on River Road, just outside Hinton and across from the Brooks Falls Picnic Area, the Big Branch Trail offers an enjoyable (but steep) 1.8 mile loop hike. This is a great trail to stretch your legs on after a picnic stop at Brooks Falls. Great views of the New River, several hundred feet below, are available as the trail ascends a steep switchback to the ridge top.

Big Branch Creek features a number of small waterfalls and cascades, including this 30 foot falls. Wonderful displays of wildflowers are visible in the spring and early summer, and traces of an old homestead are visible along the trail

After your hike, continue down River Road to visit Sandstone Falls.

Directions:

From Hinton, follow River Road north for several miles to the Brooks Falls Day Use Area (located on the right). The Big Branch Trail begins across the road from the parking area.
