Available for hiking, biking, ATVs, motorcycles and horseback
riding, the 8.3 mile Ellis Trail is a National Historic Trail. From
the north side, Ellis Trail is fairly flat and winds through meadow for
the first mile until reaching FR 509 (an old logging road). From this
point the heavily wooded single track Ellis Trail climbs steeply up the
north side of Hahn's Peak and is rough and rocky for a mile. The trail
begins a gradual down hill after reaching FR 413 & 414. Ellis
Trail offers two access points: |

- Travel west out of Steamboat Springs along Highway 40 for about 2
miles and turn right onto Elk River Road (CR 129). Continue along CR
129 for about 32 miles until it forks with FR 550. Turn right just
past Columbine and continue 2.5 miles to FR 500 and turn right.
continue along FR 500 for 0.5 miles and turn right onto FR 500.d. The
Ellis north trailhead is just up the road.
- Travel west of Steamboat along US 40 for 2 miles and turn right
(north) onto CR 129 (Elk River Road). Follow 129 for 24 miles to Hahns
Peak Village.
