Pitkin County Colorado Hiking Trails
Upper Capitol Creek Trail #1963
|
|
White
River National Forest
Popular with hikers, horseback riders and
climbers, the heavily used 7.3 mile Upper Capitol Creek Trail provides
access to Avalanche Creek Trail #1959,
West Snowmass Trail, Capitol Peak, and Mt. Daly. Upper Capitol Creek Trail
begins moderately along the ditch for 1 mile, then through aspen & fir
stands for another mile before opening up. Descending down to Capitol
Creek, the trail crosses over and meets up with Capitol Creek Trail. |
|
| Good camping spots are
available at this point. At the 6 mile point the trail switchbacks to a
double log crossing. Another 0.5 mile brings the trail to it's 2nd
crossing of the stream. The last campfire sites are located in the
fir stands on the right 1/3 mile from this crossing. Stove sites are
available on the knolls to the right about 50 yards before the Mt. Daly
Trail. Camping is not allowed in the meadows or within 200' of Capitol
Lake. Continue along the trail to Capitol Lake. Follow the trail along the
west side of the lake to reach the pass and Avalanche Creek Trail.
To reach Upper Capitol Creek Trail from Aspen Colorado, travel west
along Highway 82 for 14 miles to Old Snowmass and turn left. Continue
along Old Snowmass for 2 miles and turn right at the "T"
intersection. Travel 5 miles until the pavement ends. Continue along the
dirt road for about 3 miles to the trailhead. The last mile is on a 4WD
road. The trailhead is located past the Capitol Lake Trailhead but shares
the same parking area. |
