Pitkin County Colorado Hiking Trails
New York Creek Trail #2182
|
|
White
River National Forest
A difficult day hike through evergreen forests and
mountain meadows to a high mountain pass, the 4.2 mile (one way) New York
Creek Trail offers spectacular views of the mountainous terrain in the
White River & Gunnison National Forest. From the
parking area, New York Creek Trail crosses Lincoln Creek which is very
wide and can be tricky during high spring runoffs. |
|
| Following an old jeep road for a
mile, the trail ascends gradually, then more steeply before merging with
the old aqueduct road. Follow the old aqueduct road to the right for 05
mile. In a little over 0.25 mile, the trail crosses the Brooklyn Gulch
Creek Division. Stay on the aqueduct road which makes an immediate S
curve, then straightens. A few minutes farther the New York Creek
Diversion can be seen. A few steeps before this diversion, the New York
Trail enters the woods on the left where a sign is posted. If you reach
the end of the road you have missed this turnoff by about 50 yards. Once
in the woods, New York Trail parallels New York Creek for 0.75 mile.
Marking the last mile of the trail before the pass are cairns & wooden
post.
To reach New York Trail from Aspen Colorado, travel east along Highway
82 for 10 miles to Lincoln Creek Road and turn right. Continue along
Lincoln Creek Road for 3.1 miles to New York Creek Trail turnoff on the
right. |
