Available for hiking, mountain biking, and 4WD,
the 6.3 mile Smuggler Mountain Road -Warren Lakes is very popular for the
first 1.5 miles and offers great views of Aspen. A fairly
well maintained county 4WD road, Smuggler Mountain Road switchbacks up
Smuggler Mountain. At the 1.5 mile mark, the road curves behind Smuggler
Mountain. A scenic over look platform is located along a short steep path
to the right which offers views of Aspen. |

To continue to Warren Lakes travel straight on the road
(left goes to Hunter Creek) as it becomes a rugged 4WD road and continues
to climb steeply. At the 2.5 mile mark the road passes some communication
microwave reflectors on the right. the road becomes steeper until about
the 3 mile mark where the steepness eases. Soon the road becomes more
level with only a few brief sections of steepness until reaching the gate
at Warren Lakes. To reach Smuggler Mountain Road from Aspen
Colorado, travel east along Highway 82 to Mill Street. Turn north onto
Mill Street and continue 0.5 mile, just after the bridge and turn right
onto Gibson Street. Continue along Gibson Street for 1/8 mile to a
"Y" intersection and bear left onto South Avenue. Turn right
onto Park Circle and continue 1/8 mile to Smuggler Mountain Road on left.
Parking is on the right. |
