Pike
& San Isabel National Forest, Cimarron & Comanche National
Grasslands, National Forest in Colorado
Available for hiking & horseback riding, the 8.8 mile Abyss Lake Trail
(#602) is a popular trail which ends at Abyss Lake. The first half of Abyss
Trail travels in a northeasterly direction up the Scott Gomer Creek drainage.
Mt. Bierstadt will be visible on your left shortly after the 1st crossing of the
Scott Gomer Creek. After the 3rd crossing of Scott Gomer Creek, Abyss Lake Trail
joins up with the Rosalie Trail as they turn to the northwest.

At the next
junction the Rosalie Trail continues up to Guanella Pass as the Abyss Lake Trail
bears right across several small streams. After a series of fairly steep
switchbacks as it bears to the northeast, Abyss Lake Trail leaves the trees and
enters thick willows just to the southwest of a small lake. After leaving the
lake the trail continues up the valley until you cross the Lake Fork stream
drainage out of Abyss Lake to the trail's end at Abyss Lake.
To reach Abyss Trail from Denver Colorado, travel southwest along US 285 for
40 miles to Grant and turn north (right) onto CR 62 (toward Guanella Pass) and
continue 5.5 mils to the trailhead which is on the right (east) side of the road
just south of Burning Bear Campground.
