Crater Lakes Trail #819

Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland

Located within the Boulder Ranger District, the 3 mile Crater Lakes Trail turns right (north) off the South Boulder Creek Trail about 0.75 miles beyond the meadow at the Forest Lakes Trail junction. After the 1st switchback on the South Boulder Creek Trail. The trail climbs steeply for a mile and crosses the narrow spit of land between the 2 main lakes. To reach the highest lake, continue another 0.5 miles.

To reach Crater Lakes Trail from Nederland, travel south along Highway 119, then west out of Rollinsville on CR 16 (gravel, also Moffat Road or Rollins Pass Road). Continue along CR 16 for 7 miles where it ends at a "T"-junction. Turn left and travel 1 mile to park at the East Portal Trailhead, or if you have a high-clearance vehicle, go right and travel an additional 11 miles and park at the Forest Lakes Trailhead.
