|
|
Located within the Dolores Ranger District of San
Juan National Forest, the 3.5 mile Owens Basin Trail begins at an
elevation of 9,284' and climbs to an ending elevation of 11,000'.
The first 100 yards of Owens Basin Trail begins along the
south side of the river, then crosses the river and joins up with the West
Mancos Trail #621. After 0.5 mile the trails split with West Mancos Trail
traveling toward the North Fork of the West Mancos River and the Owens
Basin Trail up the South Fork.

The trail turns into an old mining road as it travels up
toward Owens Basin, which is situated between Spiller, Babcock, Mount Moss
and Hesperus Mountain. An old miners' cabin and other mining structures are
located along the way.
To access Owens Basin Trail from Mancos, travel east 2.5
miles and turn north (left) onto Echo Basin Road (CR 44) and continue to the
Forest boundary where the road becomes FDR 566. Continue on the northern
portion of 566 as it becomes a loop around Burnt Ridge.
