Grindstone Campground

Mount Rogers National Recreation Area

Grindstone offers 90 single camping units and 10 double units.  Water and electric hookups are available at nearly half of the sites.  Each unit has a paved parking spur, a finely crushed gravel camping pad, picnic table, fire grill, and lantern post.  Recreation vehicles up to 32 feet can fit into most sites, and a limited number of sites can accommodate vehicles up to 50 feet in length.  Single sites are limited to 8 people and 2 vehicles. Double sites are limited to 10 people and 4 vehicles. Bath-houses with flush toilets and warm water showers are provided.  Potable water is provided in bath-houses and at hand-pumps throughout the campground.  There is a waste disposal station.
The campground is open from about the first week of May to the first week of December (subject to change).  The use is typically low during weekdays, and moderate to high on weekends.  During holiday weekends (Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day), the campground fills to capacity and making reservations is highly recommended for those weekends.

Directions:

From I-81 southbound take exit 45 at Marion onto State Route 16 south.  Follow SR 16 for 17 miles; turn right onto SR 603 at Troutdale, and proceed west for approximately 6 miles to the campground entrance on the left.

From I-81 northbound
take exit 35 at Chilhowie, turn right onto SR 742 which turns into SR 600.  After crossing Iron Mountain, turn left onto SR 603 and drive  approximately 3 miles; turn right into Grindstone entrance.  (This exit not recommended for trailers.)
