Pocahontas County West Virginia Waterfalls

Falls of Hills Creek

Located in a narrow gorge just off the Highland Scenic Highway within Monongahela National Forest, the 114 acre Hills Creek Scenic Area is home to three waterfalls. The first fall (Upper Falls) viewing platform is reached by traveling along 1700 feet of paved, wheelchair accessible path. After leaving the 25' high Upper Falls, the downhill trail follows Hills Creek. At 0.5 miles the trail reaches the 45 foot Middle Falls overlook (view from above). After leaving the platform, descend down a metal stairwell which travels down several flights where the trail continues along a boardwalk. A short boardwalk path is available to the right which provides a nice view of Middle Falls from the bottom. After viewing the bottom of Middle Falls travel back to the original boardwalk trail and continue to the 63' high Lower Falls, which is West Virginia's second highest waterfall.

Note: The trail from Middle Falls down to Lower Falls became damaged in 2010. Everything below the metal stairwell at Middle Falls has been closed. If you hope to view the Lower Falls, please check with the local Forest Service office to learn the current status of the trail.

To reach the Falls of Hills Creek:

From the North and East via I-79, take exit 57 onto US 19 South to WV 55. Travel along WV 55 through Richwood to the Falls of Hills Creek (about 65 miles from exit 57)

From South and East via I 64, take exit 169 onto US 219 North to WV 39/55 West. Continue along WV 39/55 to Falls of Hills Creek (about 42 miles from exit 169 in Lewisburg)
