Allegheny National Forest

McKean, Warren, Elk and Forest Counties Pennsylvania

The Allegheny National Forest is one of 15 National Forests in the Eastern United States managed by the Forest Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Forest came into existence in 1923, after the Pennsylvania Legislature approved and President Calvin Coolidge signed a proclamation for Federal purchase of available private lands for National Forest purposes.

Located in the northwestern Pennsylvania counties of Elk, McKean, Forest and Warren, the Allegheny National Forest consists of over 513,000 acres.

RECREATION FACILITIES

  • 16 Campgrounds - over 600 sites
  • 4 highly developed campgrounds on the Allegheny Reservoir:
  • Dewdrop, Kiasutha, Red Bridge, Willow Bay (electric sites available)
  • 5 primitive campgrounds on Allegheny Reservoir -- access by boat or hiking only:
  • Handsome Lake, Hooks Brook, Hopewell, Morrison, and Pine Grove
  • 7 non-reservoir campgrounds (range from primitive to highly developed):
  • Tracy Ridge, Hearts Content, Minister Creek and Beaver Meadows (no electricity)
  • Loleta, Buckaloons and Twin Lakes (electric sites available)
  • 6 Boat Launches -- all into Allegheny Reservoir
  • Dewdrop Recreation Area (Dewdrop campers only)
  • Elijah
  • Kiasutha
  • Roper Hollow
  • Webbs Ferry
  • Willow Bay Recreation Area
  • 6 Canoe Access Sites
  • Beaver Meadows Recreation Area (into Beaver Meadows lake) --no motors
  • Buckaloons Recreation Area (into Allegheny River)
  • Dunkle Boat Launch (into Allegheny Reservoir, undeveloped)
  • Irwin Run Canoe Launch (into Clarion River)
  • Sugar Bay Boat Launch (into Allegheny Reservoir, undeveloped)
  • Tionesta Creek Canoe Launch at Sheffield (into Tionesta Creek)
  • 1 Marina
  • Kinzua-Wolf Run Marina (a full-service marina) privately operated under permit
  • 8 Facilities With Some Universally Accessible Amentities (contact the District Office for more details)
  • Elijah Boat Launch (fishing pier, restrooms, floating dock, paved walkway)
  • Hearts Content Recreation Area (restrooms, hardened path, campsites)
  • Irwin Run Canoe Launch (canoe launch, restrooms, gravel walkway)
  • Loleta (restrooms, showers, picnic pavilion, gravel walkway, campsites)
  • Tionesta Creek Canoe Launch (canoe launch, paved walkway)
  • Twin Lakes (fishing pier, restrooms, showers, swimming area, paved/gravel walkways, campsites)
  • Webbs Ferry Boat Launch (fishing pier, restrooms, paved walkway)
  • Willow Bay (restrooms, showers, floating dock, paved walkway, campsites)
  • 11 Picnic Areas
  • 5 picnic areas near the Allegheny Reservoir:
  • (Jake's Rocks Overlook, Rimrock Overlook, Kiasutha, Willow Bay, and Kinzua Beach)
  • 6 picnic areas in other areas of the Forest:
  • (Beaver Meadows, Buckaloons, Heart's Content, Loleta, Twin Lakes, and Tidioute Overlook)

  • 2 Allegheny Reservoir beaches (Kinzua Beach and Kiasutha Beach)
