Raven Cliff Furnace Trail

Mount Rogers National Recreation Area

Length:  1.0 mile
Rating: Easy

The trail begins in Raven Cliff campground and follows Cripple Creek until ending at the remains of the old Raven Cliff Iron Furnace. When the furnace was in use, iron ore was mined and mixed with limestone and charcoal. The whole concoction was dumped into the roaring furnace from above.

The mixture turned into liquid iron which was drained off into a sand pit. These "pigs" of iron were then shipped off to Richmond or other places to be alloyed and made into cast iron, steel, etc. This furnace was last used in the early 1900's.

Directions:

From Speedwell, take Route 619 east. After seven miles, you will reach the entrance to Raven Cliff campground. Turn right onto the access road, the parking area is at the end of the road on the right.
