Madison County North Carolina Hiking Trails

Roundtop Ridge Trail

Length: 3.1 miles
Rating: Strenuous

This trail may be hiked as a loop with the Appalachian Trail. It also provides access from Hot Springs to the Rich Mountain Lookout Tower.

The easiest route is to take the Appalachian Trail south from Hurricane Gap. It can also be reached by taking the Appalachian Trail north from Tanyard Gap for 2 miles, then turn left on Roundtop Ridge trail. the trail then meanders down Roundtop Ridge, passes through old farm fields and alongside timber harvest areas. It ends at the town of Hot Springs water reservoir tank.

From here, walk down the gravel road .5 miles to State Road 1304- which leads into Hot Springs. The Pump Gap Trail, Lover's Leap Trail, or the Appalachian Trail can be accessed from SR 1304 near the US 25/70 bridge at the French Broad River.

Directions:

From Hot Springs go east on US 25/70 for 3.5 miles to Tanyard Gap. Go under the overpass and take the first road on the left. Turn right at the intersection and follow the paved road. At the end of the pavement, turn left on Forest Road 467 and go approx. 4 miles to Hurricane Gap- where the Appalachian Trail crosses FR 467. Park along the road and follow the Appalachian Trail south for 1.3 miles to Roundtop Ridge Trail on the right.
