Hawaii County Hawaii Hiking Trails

Muliwai Trail

Recommended for experienced hikers, the 18 mile (round trip) Muliwai Trail zigzags up the western wall of Waipio Valley climbing about 1,200' to the plateau between the Waipio & Vaimanu Valley. The trail then leads across the plateau to Waimanu, crossing 12 gulches before descending another 1,200' into Vaimanu Valley. Flash floods are possible during rains.

Nine designated campsites are available by permits.

To reach Muliwai Trail travel along Highway 19 to the Honokaa turnoff and travel 9.5 miles to the Waipio Valley Lookout. After reaching the valley floor, take the road to the right, follow the beach to Wailoa Stream where the road ends. Cross the stream and follow the horse trail to the dunes to the west side of Waipio Valley to the beginning of the trail.
