Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail

Ala Kahakai NHT
Established for the preservation, protection and interpretation of
traditional Native Hawaiian culture and natural resources, the 175 mile
Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is not a continuous trail, but is
made up of several broken segments along the the Big Island's coastline.
The trail passes through hundreds of ancient Hawaiian settlement sites
and through over 200 ahupua'a, or traditional sea to mountain land
divisions.
Several cultural resources are located along
the Ala Kahakai NHT including important heiau (temples, royal
centers, kahua (house site foundations), ko'a (fishing shrines),
holua (stone slide) and wahi pana (sacred places).
